His handmade teacups symbolize the connection between person and object, between the past and present, and between artist and visitor. Tea Time Schedule: Saturdays, April 11 and 25, May 2 and 16, 12-2 PM Maxwell Holden (@maxwellholden) is a Vermont-based artist whose interactive installation art and ceramics seek to forge connections between art and people. Although his exhibition “You Know Me” centers around ceramic wares, his passions and interests are cross-disciplinary, spanning from painting, drawing, microbiology, chemistry, and cooking. To each of these interests he brings his innate creativity. Before returning to New England to help run ceramics at Simon Pearce, Holden taught at Ohio State University, University of Cincinnati DAAP, and Bard College at Simon’s Rock. #heyuppervallery #nhartsconnect #contemporaryclayartist

  • Upcoming deadline (April 13) for artist call: Reminder to submit your work for AVA's Mental Health Awareness Exhibition! Link in Bio

Call to artists: Gathering Constellations, an exhibition supporting mental health awareness, month of May. Exhibition dates: May 1- June 11.

The idea is based on the many different ways people are connected. The theme is intentionally open-ended, inviting many readings and personal responses. Gathering Constellations can be understood in many ways: linking points of light in the night sky; gathering flowers into a vase; noticing them scattered across a field; collecting seashells along the shore; or holding close a sequence of memories that continue to shimmer over time. It may also evoke the presence of loved ones gathered around a table—reminding us that, quite literally, we are all made of stardust.

Each year, AVA presents an exhibition dedicated to mental health awareness– this is our 6th annual exhibition! It's important to us that our titles and themes emphasize hope, connection, and renewal, often drawing inspiration from nature and community—sources of grounding and resilience. As artists and artworks come together in the gallery, they form an interconnected whole, much like stars arranged into a constellation.

  • Steve Budington's exhibition
Steve Budington's exhibition "Call Shore" runs April 10- May 23, the opening reception is scheduled for Friday, April 10, 5-7 PM. In his sculptural paintings, Budington anchors his works in “Call Shore” around maritime signal flags – used to communicate emergency messages – in his contemplation of our natural world in its own emergency. Through his exploration of space and landscape, Budington interrogates the consequences of mixed (or missed) signals, the beauty of nature, and its fate. Steve Budington (@stevebudingtonstudio) received an MFA in painting and printmaking from the Yale School of Art and a BFA in painting and art history from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Budington has shared his work nationally and internationally, including exhibitions in Vienna, New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Italy. Closer to home, the artist has exhibited at the Hall Art Foundation in Reading, Vermont, and the Phoenix Gallery in Waterbury. Budington was awarded residencies at the Hotel Pupik in Schrattenberg, Austria, and the Monhegan Island Artist in Residence in Maine. Currently, Budington works as an Associate Professor of Painting at the University of Vermont. #heyuppervalley #UVArts #UpperValleyArts #NHArts #AVAforAll #nhartists #lebanonnh #communityart

Gorman’s exhibit in the Linda Roesch Visual Arts Gallery “Abstracting the Landscape: In Search of the Essence” is a series of abstracted landscapes, inspired by and a study of his time in Tuscany. Gorman’s exhibit in the Linda Roesch Visual Arts Gallery “Abstracting the Landscape: In Search of the Essence” is a series of abstracted landscapes, inspired by and a study of his time in Tuscany. Moved by Bang’s art, visitors shared:

“As an artist myself, seeing other talented artists expressing their emotions and heart and passion deeply touches me. Misoo Bang’s art is more powerful than words. Her themes can express a range of emotions of world conflicts but there is signs of hope and a need for change which makes her passion mean more than anything because it touches the soul and me deeply.”

  • Opening reception tonight (Friday, March 13), 5-7 PM! Greg Gorman, Abstracting the Landscape: In Search of the Essence. Greg Gorman and has been a dedicated member of the AVA community since 1986 — we are delighted to be exhibiting his work. Open from March 13th- April 25, this exhibit is a must-see!

Greg Gorman (@greg_gorman_studio) is a painter, stain-glass artist, and mosaicist whose art practice has spanned over the past five decades. In 1975 he attended the Central School of Arts in London where he studied drawing, and later stained glass design at Burleighfield House. Gorman’s work is inspired by late-19th century to mid-20th century artists including the Blue Rider Group, Picasso, Braque, and Diego Rivera. His work in “Abstracting the Landscape: In Search of the Essence” emulates and reinvents in its own way, the Cubist style of these artists. His rich, saturated palettes echo that of the Blue Rider Group, his geometric Tuscan landscape studies the deconstructed forms of Picasso and Braque. Through fractured form and careful coloring, these paintings are mosaics in themselves. In varying degrees of visual decomposition, this exhibit explores the boundaries of abstraction. Gorman’s work searches for the “essence” of nature; reinvigorated, these familiar scenes question our perception of nature and beauty.

CALL TO ARTISTS: AVA's annual Mental Health Awareness Month exhibition call is open! This year's title and theme is "Gathering Constellations". We look forward to reviewing your submission! For more information, visit the "call to artists" page (link in bio) Deadline: Apr. 6, 2026 Exhibition Dates: May 1 - June 12, 2026 Location: Linda Roesch Visual Arts Gallery at AVA Image credit: Elizabeth Nelson, Star Party#heyuppervalley #nhartsconnect #artmakingtherapy #weloveart #weloveartists #westcentralbehavioralhealth @westcentralnhvt

“What a wonderful show. I love your work, Bess. I’d like to move into one of the tiny houses.”
“Bess, these sculptures are even BIGGER than I thought, and are more evocative and poetic. I went on a bike ride yesterday to a part of my town I hadn’t ever been to – lonely, overgrown… Some of that spirit here. ‘Fire Tower’ is one of my faves – especially the carved mountaintop on concrete on a log. Very happy to be here.”
“This exhibit opens the imagination and takes one to your tiny places, like dreams. I just visited Northern Ireland, and some are so reminiscent.

  • Artist Naomi Hartov, Chris Jeffrey, and John Hoglund respond to the onslaught of AI in the arts in AVA’s group show “all the colors humans have not yet named”. With the creativity and design singular to the human imagination, these artists push the boundaries of shape. Hartov and Jeffrey in particular, express their study of color through careful composition of sharp geometry in a multi-media format. Against the black background, the relationship between shape and color comes to the fore. Hoglund’s response, instead, melts shape and color together. “Wave” captures the twisting of acrylic paints into a marbled design. The marbled colors swirl into an ocean of blue empty space capturing the intersection of stillness and motion.

Visit AVA’s Linda Roesch Visual Arts Gallery to enjoy the impact of these pieces in person. Open from Tuesday to Saturday, 11- 5, the exhibition is up until February 28th.

  • For your favorite Valentine! Cathy Osman’s two pieces, ‘Red’ and ‘Cool Blue,’ bring depth and color to the walls of AVA’s Linda Roesch Visual Arts Gallery. Osman is a seasoned art professor and multi-media artist whose work spans printmaking, collage, and painting. She has taught at Smith College, Hampshire College, Mt. Holyoke, and Marlboro College, to name a few. Osman has held exhibitions at Oxbow Gallery, The Bromfield Gallery, the Brattleboro Museum of Art, and Art Center, among others. Her dynamic paintings in the Linda Roesch Gallery study the structure of plants and flowers, deconstructing, reinventing, and layering her observed landscape. The diverse textures of her brushwork are lively and spontaneous, although purposeful. In a range of colors, Osman’s paintings require careful observation. Visit AVA to view these pieces in person, along with the entire exhibition, ‘all the colors humans have not yet named’. Up until February 28th, Tuesday - Saturday, 11 AM - 5 PM.
