Before scientific illustrators began using digital techniques to make their artworks, the carbon-dust technique was the main continuous-tone (grayscale) method for medical and scientific illustration. Continuous-tone drawings made with graphite result in a highly reflective surface that is difficult to scan for accurate reproduction. The carbon dust technique produces a richly toned, matte illustration that scans and reproduces beautifully and is also suitable for fine art. Students will learn the history of the technique, view examples by its masters, and complete a carbon dust drawing, from sketch transfer to finished rendering.
