  • TODAY! Jackie Brown's artist talk, 3-4. You won't want to miss it! Jackie Brown | Fault Lines and Foundations

These sculptural works hover between vitality and fossilization. They stretch and reach even as they calcify and decay, suggesting roots, bones, or remnants of once-living structures. They inhabit a charged in-between state that is simultaneously harmonious and tense, malleable and near breaking. In this ambiguity lies their power, reflecting broader environmental and psychological conditions marked by instability, adaptation, and interdependence. Working primarily in clay, she uses 3D printing and mold making as starting points for experimental forms that invite reflection on how we perceive and relate to the natural world. At the heart of Jackie Brown’s work is a love of materiality and an endless curiosity about what it means to be alive.

Jackie Brown’s work invites reflection on how we perceive and relate to the natural world. She exhibits widely, including recent sculpture at the Alabama School of Fine Arts and the Indianapolis Art Center. Brown is the recipient of a Maine Artist Fellowship and has participated in numerous art residency programs, including the European Ceramic Work Center in the Netherlands and the Museum of Arts and Design in New York City. Brown lives on a creek among the hemlock and white pines of Maine. She teaches at Bowdoin College, where she is currently Chair of the Visual Arts Department and oversees the sculpture area. She holds an MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University and a BA from Hamilton College.

  • Tonight! Join us for an evening of Art, Memory & Anecdote: FRIDAY, MAY 22, 5:30–6:30 | IN CONVERSATION: REFLECTIONS & ANECDOTES With John R. Stomberg, Virginia Rice Kelsey 1961s Director of the Hood Museum of Art, and Katherine W. Hart, retired Senior Curator of Collections and Curator of Academic Programming, Hood Museum of Art. Stomberg and Hart to reflect on their careers through intimate, story-driven questions. The discussion moves from professional near-misses — works they tried but failed to acquire — to unexpected discoveries that stopped them cold. They explore how visitors, students, and donors have reshaped their understanding of art, and which single object in the Hood's collection continues to reward close attention. Lighter moments surface too, including behind-the-scenes stories of things going memorably wrong. It closes with an open, enduring question each has carried throughout their career — about art, collecting, and the deeper purpose of museums. Together, the questions paint a portrait of two lives spent in devoted service to art.

  • Join us Friday, May 22, for an evening with Retired Curator of Collections and Curator of Academic Programming at the Hood Museum of Art, Katherine W. Hart, spent 30 years at the Hood, forging the museum’s academic programming. Hart was the first curator of academic programming in the country, setting a precedent both at the Hood and nationally for academic integration with curation. Preceding her tenure at Dartmouth, Hart worked at the Clark Art Institute, LACMA, UCLA, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Her vast experience at leading art institutions throughout the years provided her with a wealth of curating adventures and artistic connections. One of these connections is the Hood’s Virginia Rice Kelsey 1961s Director, John R. Stomberg whose own career has overlapped twice with Hart. The two will reunite at AVA for a conversation about their time at the Hood, the challenges, joys, and surprises they faced during their time there. We hope to see you there!

Photo-journalist, Ted Degener (@teddegener), began cross-country road tripping in the ‘70s. This was the beginning of his over 50 year journey across the United States, uncovering hidden gems among the roadside landscape. His photos documented roadside landmarks and hand-painted advertisements uncovering a mosaic of new visual languages and subcultures. His new book, “American Celebration 2: Storefronts & Hand-made Signs” brings these peripheral subjects into focus. Each year for the last six years, AVA and West Central Behavioral Health have presented an exhibition dedicated to National Mental Health Awareness Month. Drawing on nature and community as sources of grounding and resilience, this year's exhibition takes inspiration from the night sky.

In asking artists what constellations they gather, responses were wide-ranging and deeply personal: linking points of light in the night sky; gathering flowers into a vase; noticing them scattered across a field; collecting seashells along the shore; or holding close a sequence of memories that continue to shimmer over time.

Research suggests that experiences of awe and wonder can positively affect well-being. Stargazing in particular has been shown to reduce stress and foster calm and perspective — a phenomenon some scientists call

  • Join us TODAY for an artist talk with Tom Ferrara, Friday, April 17th 5:30-6:30 PM!

Ferrara's exhibit “Dualities” composes form and color in a series of paintings that explore the tensions of movement, light, and shape. The artist reflects the styles of visual art forms like writing, graffiti, hieroglyphics, and rock art – forms that have transformed but transcended time. Grounded by grid like notations, abbreviations of architectural as well as animal forms, the paintings are textured and dynamic, as if alive.

Ferrara studied art and architecture at the University of Maryland and Montgomery College after which he worked with Willem de Kooning as his studio assistant between 1979-1987 in East Hampton, NY. He has exhibited at the Katarina Rich Perlow Gallery and taught at the National Academy of Design in NYC. He currently teaches studio art at Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH.

  • Call to Artists: Converse with the Crossroads of the Wind. Call Deadline: June 8th. The Exhibition will be held in the Clifford B. West and Rebecca Lawrence Galleries, July 31–September 12, 2026.

The exhibition concept supports artists whose practices thrive within ambiguity, inquiry, and material exploration. Thematically, Converse with the Crossroads of the Wind centers on ideas that engages liminal states of being through various thresholds. Artists are encouraged to present works that engage with change, approached from various angles of discovery—be it personal perspective, uncertainty, socio-political opinion, cultural memory, or bold and experimental narrative techniques. The exhibition’s title is drawn from poet Alice Paalen Rahon, whose writing evokes movement, flux, and states of becoming. Rahon’s work—shaped by Surrealism, exile, and cross-cultural exchange, and historically connected to figures such as Pablo Picasso—serves as a conceptual touchstone rather than a literal reference, framing the exhibition as a space for openness, transformation, and poetic interpretation.

Opening tomorrow! Friday, April 10, 5-7PM! And to pique your interest, here are some fun installation shots! Jackie Brown, Steve Budington, Tom Ferrara, Maxwell Holden— Artists whose shared concerns explore boundaries and transitional spaces that are ecological, material, communicative, and human. Together, the four exhibitions move from the deep time of Brown's fossilizing forms through Budington's urgent present, into Ferrara's timeless mark-making, and arrive finally at Maxwell Holden — where pottery is a practice of human connection. @j_a_c_k_i_e_b_r_o_w_n @stevebudingtonstudio @maxwellholden #maineartist #vermonartist #nhartsconnect #heyuppervalley #weloveartists
