Announcing:

The First Annual Greg Hemberger

Sustainable Architecture Workshop for Teens

July 30—August 3, 2012

AVA is pleased to announce that applications are now being accepted for The First Annual Greg Hemberger Sustainable Architecture Workshops for Teens, which will take place from July 30-August 3, 2012. This workshop was created in memory of the architect Greg Hemberger, with the support of the Greg Hemberger Memorial Fund of the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation, established by Hemberger’s family and friends.

Structured for young people with an interest in sustainable design and construction, this five-day workshop will consist of hands-on morning sessions at AVA, led by local professionals, and afternoon visits to local architecture offices, construction companies, and LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified buildings. The workshop will incorporate architectural design principles, free-hand drawing, model-building, sustainability standards, and other pertinent topics. It will also provide students with new design skills, personal portfolio material, and an idea of whether sustainable architecture and construction is of potential career interest to them.

Participation is limited to 12 students from grades 10-12. Tuition for this five-day (9am-5pm), 40-hour workshop is $350. Scholarships are available to those who need assistance with all or part of the tuition. Application forms are available by clicking here, as well as in guidance counselors’ offices at area high schools. Application forms must be received by May 1, and students will be notified of their acceptance status by May 30.

Eliza McLellan, a senior majoring in Sustainable Architecture in Connecticut College’s Architectural Studies program, will be running the workshop; local professionals will be guest instructors.

Greg Hemberger’s commitment to architecture started at age 15 with his model-building business, which served architects in the New Haven, CT area. Before his sudden death in 2006, Hemberger, as a partner at Banwell Architects, worked on many buildings in the region, Including the Norwich Elementary School, Hanover’s Middle School and High School, Crossroads Academy, Thetford Academy, Proctor Academy, Kimball Union Academy, and Cardigan Mountain School.

AVA wishes to thank the many individuals who have worked to make possible this new program: Brian Walsh, Stu White, Jack Wilson, Bill and Betsy Peabody, Eliza McLellan, Ingrid Nichols, and especially June, Ben and Gretchen Hemberger. The Hemberger’s commitment to making this program a part of AVA’s multi-faceted offerings takes on a special significance, given that the architectural firm responsible for the renovation design of AVA’s LEED Gold-certified building is Banwell Architects.

CAOS (Community Arts Open Studio) for Toddlers and Caregivers

AVA Gallery and Art Center is pleased to announce that, as of January 2012, CAOS for Toddlers (CAT) will take place on Friday mornings, from 9:30-11:30, in the Children’s Studio. This new program is made possible thanks to a grant from The Pauline Davenport Children’s Fund of the Vermont Community.

This program is an extension of AVA’s popular Saturday Community Arts Open Studio (CAOS) and exemplifies AVA’s commitment to making the arts available and accessible to all ages and abilities.

Unlike the Saturday CAOS, which costs $5 per child, CAOS for Toddlers is free of charge. (Donations are always appreciated.)

Participants may use any of the art supplies available in AVA’s Children’s Studio. Since AVA does not provide studio monitors for this new program, as we do for Saturday CAOS, caregivers must remain with their toddlers.

CAOS for Toddlers follows the same calendar schedule as our Saturday CAOS; thus, the program for Winter and Spring 2012 is offered through May 18, then starts again in September.

Bring your toddlers and join the fun at AVA’s Community Arts Open Studio for Toddlers!

Summer 2012

Internship and Camp Assistant

Applications Now Available

AVA’s many programs benefit greatly from the important participation of dedicated and capable high school and college students. In turn, the individuals who become part of the AVA team as Summer Camp Assistants and Interns acquire diverse skills and experiences as they work towards careers in the arts.

Camp Assistants work directly with faculty members to create exciting and memorable Summer Art Camps for children and teens. Please click here to download the Camp Assistant application. The deadline is April 1.

Interns help in multiple ways with AVA's education, exhibition, and community arts programs. Internships are designed with the interests of the applicant in mind; individuals seeking experience in a fine art gallery, art education and community arts programming, or arts administration would be rewarded by their time at AVA. Please click here to download the Internship application. The deadline is April 15.

Download AVA's Green Building Tour App!

As of December 9, 2011, AVA Gallery and Art Center has what is believed to be the very first application—or “app”— focusing on a “green”  building project, namely the initiatives that were taken in 2006-2007 to make the renovation of AVA’s Carter-Kelsey Building a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold-Certified project.

We proudly invite you to click here and download the Free AVA LEED App to your iTouch, iPhone or iPad.

Special thanks go to Barbara Jones and Eric Richardson for their conceptual and technical development of this project; to Patrick Luteran, 2010 AVA intern and an architecture student, for developing part of the verbiage used in this app; to C. Stuart White, Jr., AIA, for all his professional advice and for the writing of specific segments; to Brandy Zarle and Tim Rush, New York City-based actors who, while performing this fall at Shaker Bridge Theatre in Enfield, New Hampshire, donated their time and expertise to record voice-over for part of the app’s audio; and to the Highfield Foundation for funding this project.

Thanks to the support of Systems Plus Computers, curious visitors can also take the AVA LEED tour on iPods that are available, and can be signed out for loan, from the AVA office.
