Judy Laliberte:
Prozac in a Tube: Painting My Way through Mud Season

The E.N. Wennberg Gallery: February 22 – March 22, 2008

Opening Reception: Friday, February 29, 5 – 7pm

Watercolor is the prevailing theme of AVA Gallery and Art Center’s February – March exhibitions, where three of the four gallery spaces in AVA’s newly renovated building will be devoted to this popular and expressive medium.

An exhibition of recent watercolors by Judy Laliberte of Quechee, Vermont, titled “Prozac in A Tube: Painting My Way through Mud Season,” will be on view in AVA’s E.N. Wennberg Gallery from February 22 through March 22, 2008. A reception, free and open to the public, will take place Friday, February 29, from 5 to 7pm.

In her work, Judy is often inspired by a blank piece of paper, by her imagination, and by the anticipation of where the process might lead her. She is drawn to paintings that tell a story, ask a question, debunk a stereotype, or just makes the viewer smile. Humor is frequently a byproduct of her painting, and she often employs bold, colorful, and repetitive patterns, along with exaggerated images to enhance her story.  She is fascinated by people, their behaviors, and their interpersonal relationships and is more concerned with capturing a feeling, an emotion, a moment in time, than in depicting reality. Her images often includes doorways, windows, roads, and people in shadow to create a sense of mystery and to symbolize opportunity, change, beginnings, and endings.

In addition to being a signature member of the Vermont Watercolor Society, Judy is a member of Boston’s Copley Society and the Chaffee Art Center in Rutland, Vermont. She has exhibited in numerous juried shows throughout New England. This is Judy Laliberte’s first solo exhibition at AVA.
