Edvard Munch (1863-1944), Norwegian painter and graphic artist, is regarded as a pioneer of the modern Expressionist movement. Innovative, intense and prolific, he bequeathed all the works in his possession, 1008 paintings, 15000 prints (including etchings, lithographs and woodcuts), 4500 drawings, 6 sculptures, as well as sketchbooks and literary notes, to the City of Oslo. The Munch Museum, keeper of this vast collection, opened in 1963.
