April 9 & April 23, 2006
4:00pm - 6:30pm
•
In connection with two notable exhibitions of paintings and prints by the Norwegian artist Edvard Munch (1863-1944), held in New York City from mid-February to mid- May 2006*, AVA Gallery and Art Center is pleased to present two programs that will expand upon his life and work. Munch’s emotionally charged work, which profoundly influenced modern Expressionism, continues to resonate with singular relevance in today’s complicated world. The programs at AVA will feature a slide lecture by the renowned Munch collector, Sarah G. Epstein; two 16mm films by artist Clifford B. West; and a slide talk by Munch scholar Bente Torjusen. They have all had exceptional access to Munch's work, and their presentations will add new dimensions and insight into the artist’s illustrious career.
In 1986 the exhibition "Edvard Munch: Encounter in Space," comprised of prints from the Epstein Family Collection, was held at the Hood Museum of Art at Dartmouth College. It is therefore fitting that Brian P. Kennedy, director of the Hood Museum, will give introductory remarks prior to Sarah G. Epstein’s talk on April 9.
Prior to Bente Torjusen’s talk on April 23, which will focus on Munch and his association with literary figures, Jim Schley will read selected passages from some of Henrik Ibsen’s plays.
These events will benefit AVA’s education program. Registration is required.
* "Edvard Munch: The Modern Life of the Soul" is on view at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMa) through May 8; and "Edvard Munch: Symbolism in Print" can be seen at Scandinavia House through May 13
