Ross Ozer is a Provincetown, MA artists who recently donated a work to AVA's 10X10 popup show and benefit show. Recently off the success of his exhibition of new work at the Rittenhouse Square Fine Art Show in Philadelphia, Ozer and his journey was profiled in the Provincetown Independent, just in time for a show at the Ali Gray Gallery.
Ozer has had a lifelong interest in quilts and quilt patterns, which comes through in his large works, many of which are inspired by the traditional "Drunkards Path" design. It is Ross' unique use of color, pattern, and materials that gives his work such a unique presence. Juliet Leary, writing for the Independent, reports on Ozer's process as, "A methodology that begins in Adobe Illustrator, where he creates his compositions and tests color relationships. He prints the finished design on thin mulberry paper, commonly sold as rice paper, then fuses it between layers of wax on a wooden panel. The paper nearly disappears, leaving the printed geometry suspended within the surface. Following the embedded design, Ozer builds thousands of marks across its larger shapes. Some swell into rounded beads, while others settle nearly flat. Translucent pigments allow the printed colors to flicker through, and the flat geometry gradually rises from the panel."
